Did the Combine Predict Production?

The most-watched pre-draft event, measured against what actually happened. Every combine workout is joined to realized career value, and within each position the correlation is the honest verdict: for quarterbacks and receivers the testing explains almost nothing; only in the trenches does athleticism carry a modest signal.

The verdict, by position

Correlation between the athletic composite and realized career VAL. Higher bars mean the workout tracked production more closely — none of them tracked it strongly.

The honest inverse: players who tested elite but produced below their athletic rank. Every name here carries a real career-value number — a player with no realized value is excluded, never labeled a bust.

Method

Athletic composite = mean of available combine z-scores within position group (40/shuttle/3-cone inverted so higher is always better), joined to realized career VAL. Correlation is the honest per-position verdict on whether the workout predicted production. Players without a VAL career number are excluded, never labeled a bust.

3,093 players across 8position groups have both a combine workout and a realized career-value number. Overall athletic-to-production correlation: r 0.16.

Rankings as of 2026-08-01, as declared by the corpus that produced them.
